Getting
Started with SinapsPlus®
on a PC
What
do I need?
- Computer:
You will need a PC compatible computer conforming
with specified system
requirements.
- Software:
You will need SINDA/FLUINT, the underlying solution
engine for SinapsPlus, up and running on
your computer. See Thermal
and Fluid Analysis: Getting Started with SINDA/FLUINT
for information on getting SINDA/FLUINT downloaded
and installed. You will also need to download the
latest version of SinapsPlus from the download
page. If you are interested in the 30-day demo
version, please download from the demo
web page.
- License:
You will need a current SinapsPlus user
license (SINAPS.lic). If you downloaded the 30-day
demo version, a demo license was emailed to you
(PC platform only). To purchase a license or to
obtain a 30-day demo for the HP platform, please
contact C&R Technologies.
How
do I install SinapsPlus?
- Installing
SinapsPlus:
To install the software, you must have Admin privileges.
Simply double-click on the installation file to
begin the installation process. Follow instructions
in the installer to complete the installation.
If you are working on a network you will probably
need to contact your system administrator.
How
do I install the license file?
- Acquiring
the license file:
If you downloaded the PC-based 30-day demo, you
should have received an email containing the license
information (save the email as text format for use
when installing the license). If you purchased a
PC version, you should have received a license file
from a sales representative. If you installed the
HP version you will need to contact C&R
Technologies for a license.
- If
you need a license file for the PC, please run
the Licenser Manager Utility under Start>Programs>SinapsPlus>License
Manager. Click "Request License File",
fill out the subsequent forms, and email or
fax the information per the instructions.
- Installing
the license file:
Once you have a license file or email response for
the 30-day demo download, you can install the license
using the License Manager Utility. The manager is
accessed through Start>Programs>SinapsPlus>License
Manager. Click "Install License Files"
and follow the instructions. When you are asked
to browse for the file, you will need to browse
to the license file you received from our sales
representative or to the text version you saved
of the email you received when you downloaded the
30-day demo. If you are installing on an HP, you
will receive instructions for license file installation
from our sales department.
Running
SinapsPlus
- Verify
installation:
To verify the installation of SinapsPlus
and your license file, we recommended you run one
of the sample problems. Using the start menu on
a PC, select Start>Programs>SinapsPlus>Prebuilt
Image. If you receive and error message regarding
licenses, run the Licence Manager, click on license
report and submit results to C&R support. The
SinapsPlus Desktop will open. In the window
titled "Model Control", double click either
fin or pipe on the right side of the window in the
section titled "Select Current Model".
A new window, also titled "Model Control",
will replace the old window. The new window has
tabs running across the top. Select the tab called
"Model Control". A series of buttons are
displayed on the left side of the window. Click
the "Run SINDA/FLUINT" button to bring
up the submenu and select "Preprocess and run",
then "Normal Operation". You should see
a processor status window appear. At the completion
of the run a window will appear stating "Successful
completion of processor". You will find the
results (output and save files) of the run located
in the same directory as the input deck. If the
run terminates in errors, you may have problems
associated with the installation. Please take note
of the error message received and contact C&R
support.
- Starting
SinapsPlus:
SinapsPlus uses Image Files to create a
model. An image file contains your model information
and part of the software executable so it is very
large in size. The Starting Image file located in
the install directory and accessible from the start
menu cannot be modified and saved. This insures
you always have a good working image on your machine.
To start a new model it is recommended you open
the Starting Image through the start menu and save
it as "workImage". Then browse to the
directory titled "images" in the SinapsPlus
installation directory (typically C:/Program Files/Cullimore
and Ring/Sinapsplus) and copy the workImage file
you just created and paste it into your working
directory elsewhere on your computer.
I
have installed SinapsPlus and the license,
what next?
- User's
Manual: When you installed SinapsPlus,
the User's Manual was automatically installed if
you are running on a PC. You can access it through
the start menu under Start>Programs>SinapsPlus>Sinaps
help. If you are running on an HP work station you
can download the
manual. This manual only discusses the graphical
interface techniques in SinapsPlus. We recommend
that you also review the SINDA/FLUINT User's Manual,
accessible through the start menu Start>Programs>SindaFluint>Sinda
help, which contains important information on program
structure, available modeling objects, subroutines
available to the user, modeling methods, and much
more. We highly recommend that you take some time
to review the SINDA/FLUINT manual, especially sections
1, 2, and 4 prior to getting started with SinapsPlus.
- Tutorials:
Download our tutorials.
These tutorials will walk you through sample problems
with guidance for making various modeling decisions.
The tutorials are available in two formats, one
ASCII based and the second uses SinapsPlus
as a GUI. Be sure to download the SinapsPlus
versions of the tutorials since these contain the
SinapsPlus overview and usage instructions.
We recommend all new users work through these tutorials
before starting a thermal or fluid analysis task
of their own.
- Sample
Problems:
In addition to the SINDA/FLUINT User's Manual we
offer an extensive "Sample Problem Appendix".
This document is available on the install CD but
can also be downloaded
from our web site. The Sample Problem Appendix
provides a wide assortment of sample problems with
detailed discussion of various thermal and fluid
analysis options and how best to make appropriate
modeling decisions. We recommend all users look through
these sample problems. Input decks associated with
each sample problem are installed in the "sample"
directory located in the SINDA/FLUINT installation
directory.
Training
Classes
- SINDA/FLUINT
Class Notes:
The class notes
for our standard SINDA class and Advanced Design
class are available for download from the web site.
We recommend users download these training notes
and review them thoroughly. These notes provide
an overview of the SINDA program structure and guidance
for usage. The associated lab notes can also be
downloaded.
- Training
Opportunities: We offer training classes for
all of our products. It is strongly recommended
that all new users attend one of our training classes.
The classes, although based on training notes available
for download, provide a significant amount of information
and instruction not included in the training notes.
For more information about the available training
classes please visit our Training
web page. We also offer custom
training.
- Mini
Topic Classes: C&R Technologies offers
a variety of short online topic based classes
which are free to the user. You review the class
listing and register for these classes
at our web site.
- Heat
Transfer Reference Books and Education:
Although the SINDA/FLUINT User's Manual is extensive,
it alone will not provide the necessary background
required for creating quality thermohydraulic
models. Creating a good model requires educated
assessments of how best to model a system to achieve
the desired results. This can only be achieved
with a strong background in the principles of
heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid
flow.
Installation
and User Support
- For
support we recommend you start with our Online
Knowledge Database. This forum based database
has search capabilities to help you find answers
to your questions. You can also post new topics
to get answers to your questions.
