CRTech SpaceClaim® Demonstration Problem: Junction Box

This demonstration problem illustrates the preparation* of a C&R Thermal Desktop® model from a complex part using CRTech SpaceClaim. (CRTech SpaceClaim is an extension of SpaceClaim Corporations’ SpaceClaim Engineer® product.  Please visit www.spaceclaim.com for other training resources, including extensive topic-specific tutorials.)

A hydraulic junction box (shown below) has considerable thermal mass, and therefore its temperature will lag that of the fluid (which is sometimes stagnant, sometimes flowing) during operation. The box also convects to the environment through its substantial surface area, and conducts through its mounting plates to an undefined structure as well.

Only a STEP file is available to define this complex box. This file describes the pieces as a set of disconnected surfaces, with various geometric defects present. The original geometry is visible below, with internal fluid passages visible as well. On one side, two fluid ports are present. On the opposite side, a single port is present, surrounded by capped access taps (whose thermal mass and surface area cannot be completely neglected). On each end, the side plates have been bolted on and angle brackets have been attached, with mounting holes drilled on the base.

The geometry will be healed and simplified, and other preparations will be made as well before sending the resulting parts to Thermal Desktop for thermal/fluid simulations. For an experienced analyst, this entire model preparation process takes only about 30 minutes.
